Joint Model Verification Checklist
Review prompts for verifying FE models of joints — fastener load distribution, contact status, preload balance and correlation with hand calculations.
Purpose
For verifying FE models of structural joints.
Verification
- Is the total fastener load consistent with the applied load and equilibrium? — Sum of fastener loads = applied load
- Is the fastener load distribution compared with an analytical estimate? — Spring model or handbook method
- Is the contact status at the joint interface verified? — Contact where expected, gapping where expected
- Is the bolt force after preload and external loading consistent? — Preload + external effect
- Is the joint model sensitive to the fastener stiffness assumption? — Vary stiffness and check load distribution
