Rotating Disc Stress Terminology
Glossary of terms for rotating disc stress analysis — radial, hoop, bore, rim, web and blade pull.
Radial stress
Stress acting along the radius from the rotation axis. In a rotating disc, the radial stress is tensile and is maximum at an intermediate radius.
Hoop (circumferential) stress
Stress acting tangent to the circumference. In a rotating disc, the hoop stress is tensile and is typically maximum at the bore.
Bore
The inner radius of an annular disc. The bore is the location of the maximum hoop stress.
Rim
The outer radius of the disc where the blades are attached. The rim carries the accumulated blade pull.
Web
The disc material between the bore and the rim that transfers the load from the rim to the bore.
Blade pull
The centrifugal force exerted by each blade on the disc rim. The total rim load is the sum of all blade pulls.
