Probabilistic Design Standards & Guidance
Engineering context for standards that explicitly require or support probabilistic design methods — scope, relevance and relationship to deterministic design. Always refer to the current official source.
Scope
Some standards explicitly require probabilistic design for specific applications — particularly where the consequence of failure is severe, the cost of conservatism is high, or the input uncertainties are well characterised. These standards define the required format of the probabilistic analysis, the acceptance criteria and the documentation requirements.
Relationship to deterministic design
Probabilistic design is typically an alternative to deterministic design, not a replacement. The standard may allow either approach, with the probabilistic approach used where it offers a benefit — lighter design, better use of data, or more consistent reliability. The engineer must demonstrate that the probabilistic analysis is at least as safe as the deterministic approach.
