Purpose

Pressure boundary welding standards define the requirements for weld procedure qualification, welder qualification, inspection methods, acceptance criteria and documentation. The welds in a pressure boundary are critical to structural integrity, and the standards ensure that welding is performed to a consistent and verifiable quality.

Relevant standard families

  • ASME BPVC Section IX — welding and brazing qualifications
  • EN ISO 15614 — specification and qualification of welding procedures
  • AWS D1.1 — structural welding code (steel), applicable to some pressure applications

Engineering relevance

The welding standard defines the required weld type (butt, fillet, partial penetration), the inspection method (radiography, ultrasonic, dye penetrant, magnetic particle), the acceptance criteria for weld defects, and the documentation requirements. The structural analysis assumes that the welds meet the applicable quality level. The weld efficiency factor used in design is linked to the inspection level.
