What is it?

The FIA (Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile) publishes technical regulations for motorsport categories including Formula 1, Formula E, WRC and WEC. These regulations define structural safety requirements: survival cells, frontal impact structures, side impact structures, roll structures and static load tests. Each design must be homologated — formally approved — before competition.

Who publishes it?

The FIA. The regulations are category-specific and updated annually. They are publicly available from the FIA website.

Key structural requirements

RequirementScope
Survival cellMonocoque structure protecting the driver — static load and penetration tests
Frontal impact structureEnergy-absorbing nose cone — dynamic impact test
Side impact structureEnergy-absorbing side pods — dynamic and static tests
Roll structurePrincipal and secondary roll structures — static load test
Headrest and cockpitImpact and static load requirements around the driver
SuspensionMechanical failure safety requirements and wheel retention

Why it matters to engineering analysis

The motorsport structural engineer uses explicit dynamic FEA for crash structure design and linear static FEA for survival cell and roll structure load cases. The regulations define specific load cases and acceptance criteria — for example, a specific force applied at a specific point with a maximum deflection limit. The analysis must demonstrate compliance before physical homologation testing.

Motorsport regulations are highly prescriptive about test geometry, load application points and acceptance criteria. The FIA regulations are the definitive source — this page provides engineering context only.

Typical evidence

  • Explicit dynamic FEA: crash structure energy absorption and peak deceleration
  • Linear static FEA: survival cell and roll structure load cases
  • Physical homologation tests: FIA-witnessed static and dynamic tests
  • Material test data: composite material qualification for structural components

Relationship to other standards

  • FIA Formula 1 Technical Regulations: category-specific structural requirements
  • FIA Formula E Technical Regulations: electric powertrain safety in addition to structural
  • FIA WEC / WRC regulations: endurance and rally-specific structural requirements
