Scope

Model validation standards provide frameworks for assessing whether a computational model adequately represents the physical system. ASME V&V 10 and V&V 20 address validation in computational solid mechanics and fluid dynamics respectively. The standards define validation metrics, evidence requirements and the treatment of validation uncertainty.

Relationship to probabilistic assessment

In a probabilistic assessment, model-form uncertainty is one component of the total uncertainty. Validation quantifies the model-form uncertainty by comparing model predictions with test data. A validated model has a quantified model-form uncertainty that can be included in the probabilistic analysis. An unvalidated model has an unquantified model-form uncertainty that represents a gap in the assessment.
