Fatigue Reliability Standards & Guidance
Engineering context for fatigue reliability standards — scatter in S-N data, probabilistic fatigue life prediction and relationship to damage tolerance. Always refer to the current official source.
Scope
Fatigue reliability standards address the treatment of scatter in fatigue data and the probability of fatigue failure. Some standards define statistical S-N curves (mean, standard deviation, and lower-bound tolerances) and require the design curve to be based on a specified percentile and confidence level. Others define probabilistic damage accumulation requirements.
Relationship to damage tolerance
Damage tolerance standards may require probabilistic crack-growth analysis — treating initial flaw size, crack-growth rate and inspection capability as random variables. The probability of detection (POD) is a key input, determining how inspection updates the reliability. The standards define the required inspection intervals and the reliability targets.
