DNV Structural Design Context
The purpose and engineering context of DNV standards and recommended practices for marine and offshore structures — how DNV rules shape structural design, fatigue assessment and verification.
What is it?
DNV (Det Norske Veritas, now DNV after merging with GL) is a classification society that publishes rules and recommended practices for marine and offshore structures. DNV standards cover ship classification, offshore structures, wind turbines, lifting equipment and pipelines. The DNV-ST (standards) and DNV-RP (recommended practices) series are widely used in the offshore industry.
Who publishes it?
DNV AS, headquartered in Norway. Other major classification societies include Lloyd’s Register (LR), American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and Bureau Veritas (BV). For ships, the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) harmonises Common Structural Rules across member societies.

Why it matters to engineering analysis
DNV rules define load cases, acceptance criteria and analysis methods for marine and offshore structures. DNV-RP-C203 is widely used for fatigue assessment using S-N curves and the hotspot stress approach. DNV-RP-C208 provides guidance on non-linear FEA for structural capacity assessment. The engineer must use the correct DNV document for the specific structure type and application.
Typical evidence
- Static strength analysis with DNV load factors
- Fatigue assessment using DNV S-N curves and hotspot stress (DNV-RP-C203)
- Non-linear collapse analysis for ultimate capacity (DNV-RP-C208)
- Wave load analysis: hydrodynamic loads on fixed and floating structures
Relationship to other standards
- IACS Common Structural Rules: harmonised rules for bulk carriers and tankers
- ISO 19900 series: offshore structural design standards
- AWS D1.1: structural welding code (where welding is governed separately)
