Purpose

For checking weld static strength assessment.

Geometry

  • Is the weld throat thickness correctly defined? — Throat = 0.707 × leg for fillet
  • Is the effective weld length correct — excluding start/stop craters? — Per standard
  • Is the weld type identified — fillet, butt, partial penetration? — Different allowables

Stress

  • Is the stress on the weld throat correctly calculated? — Shear on throat for fillet
  • Is the correct allowable used — weld metal or parent metal? — Typically the lower
  • Is the allowable from the applicable standard (BS EN, AWS, IIW)? — Not estimated
  • Is combined shear and normal stress on the throat assessed? — Vector sum or interaction
