Wave Transit Time Calculator
Calculate the stress-wave transit time through a specified material thickness. Shows the equation, variables and result.
Calculator
t_transit = L / c where: t_transit = wave transit time [s] L = distance (thickness or span) [m] c = wave speed [m/s] For 1D: c = sqrt(E / rho) For 3D: c_d = sqrt(E*(1-nu) / (rho*(1+nu)*(1-2*nu))) Enter L and c (or E, rho, nu for automatic calculation) to compute t_transit.
Assumptions
- Material is homogeneous and isotropic
- Wave propagation is elastic (no plasticity or damage)
- 1D or 3D wave speed as specified
Limitations
This calculator computes the elastic wave transit time. In real impact, the wave speed may change due to plasticity, damage or temperature. The transit time is used to assess whether stress-wave effects are significant (compare with contact duration) — it does not predict the structural response.
